The forages in this mix were developed and tested for the unique soils and weather conditions found in Texas and the surrounding regions. Triticale Forage Grain, “Texas” Sweet Clovers, and the best Forage Turnips are used in this mix to create an annual food plot that is unequaled for Texas.

Seeds in Texas MegaPlot...

Forage Grain Triticale:
This forage grain is the hybrid cross of forage wheat and forage rye. The results of the hybrid cross produces a forage grain that stands head and shoulders above all other forage grain crops. The triticale produces abundant forage that is more palatable, higher protein content, and more digestible than other forage grains. These plants are more widely adaptable making them perfect to be planted in both northern and southern climates. Like other forage grains, deer love these plants as soon as they emerge from the ground, but with triticale deer will continue to forage on the plants longer into the growing season.

Forage Clovers for Texas:
A select group of annual clovers including “Texas” Sweet Clovers are used in this mix because they were developed for the unique soils and weather conditions in Texas. These annual clover plants establish quickly and are bushier than most other clovers and will give your deer herd a reliable source of high protein nutrition. Forage clovers’ consistent high level of protein (up to 35%) and their mineral content make it a forage that deer need and prefer.

Forage Turnip Brassica:
The best yielding New Zealand forage turnip brassica to deliver the highest levels of protein and mineral content of any annual forage available on the market today, providing up to 38% protein. This forage turnip has been adapted to an extremely wide range of soils and weather conditions and will provide abundant large-leaf and root forage into the winter months. Average mature plant height is 24 inches tall. These forage brassicas have been selected to begin maturing in about 45 days. Once mature, they begin fixing more sugars in their leaves and become a huge attractant to deer. As the sugars are fixed in the leaves, the protein begins to increase and deer begin to forage heavily on the leaves to get the nutrients that they need. Cool weather will jump start these plants to increase it's sugar content.

Moisture, Soil Preparation and Planting Depth are crucial to the success of your food plot.
1. Cultivate plot 4-6 inches deep.
2. Add 150 lbs 13-13-13 fertilizer per 1/2 acre and add lime as needed.
3. Broadcast seed (20 lbs per 1/2 acre) and cover with no more than 1/4 inch of soil.

Soil Preparation:
To successfully grow Texas MegaPlot you must properly prepare your seed bed. The soil must be cultivated a minimum of 4”- 6” deep until the clumps are worked out of the soil. This will greatly increase the amount of moisture your soil will hold during long dry spells. After properly cultivating it is very important to lightly pack your seed bed by running over your food plot with a roller or ATV.

a. Fertilizer Requirements - For optimum results, a soil test should be performed prior to planting to determine your plot’s need for fertilizer and lime. If a soil test cannot be done, we recommend preparing the seed bed by applying up to 150 lbs of 13-13-13 fertilizer or equivalent per 1/2 acre.

b. pH of Soil & Liming - The recommended soil pH is 6.3-7.6. A soil test should be performed prior to planting to determine your soil pH and the need for lime & fertilizer. Do not add lime to Texas soils without a soil test.

Planting Depth:
Texas MegaPlot contains fairly large seeds that need to be planted 1/4” deep. This can be accomplished by mechanical drill or by broadcasting the seed evenly over the seed bed, and covering with up to 1/4” of soil. If broadcasting, covering the seed can be accomplished by dragging the plot. After planting seed, it is important to lightly pack your seed bed by running over your food plot with a roller or ATV.

Moisture:
When planting in the Fall it is great to plant just before the first Fall rains. When planting before first rains be sure to roll or lightly pack the soil after planting the seed to ensure equal moisture distribution from the first rains. If planted during the recommended times, irrigation will not be needed in most of Texas. In areas that are irrigated, do not flood the seed bed after planting; provide normal quantities of water on a regular basis.

By using hybrid grains, “Texas” sweet clovers and proven forage turnips, we are able to offer a food plot that will produce high protein forage from early Fall throughout the Winter and into the Spring. Texas MegaPlot contains forage seeds to be planted for the cool months in areas where rainfall can be marginal. Plant Texas MegaPlot in he late summer and Fall to supplement, hold and build your deer herd. In Southern areas, additional plots can be planted in late Winter to provide additional forage for the Spring.
